Elvis Aaron Presley 8th January 1935 - 16th August 1977

There are as many comprehensive biographies concerning Elvis as there are stars in the sky, therefore I will restrict myself to several salient points in his life.

Elvis Aaron Presley was born on the 8th January 1935 in Mississippi, USA as one of a pair of twin boys to Jesse Garon. In 1948 the Presleys moved with all their goods and chattels to Memphis, Tennesee. After completing his school career in 1948 the 18 year old Elvis started work in a tool making factory.

August 1954 Elvis was on a concert tour in Texas.

He married Priscilla Beguile in May 1967 who he met in 1959 in Germany whilst completing his military service there. His daughter, Lisa Marie was born nine months later.

In 1969 Elvis produced over thirty new songs, amongst them were the super hits, ‘In the Ghetto’, ‘Don’t Cry Daddy’ and ‘Suspicious Minds’ After appearing in the new Las Vegas hotel, Hotel International - later Hilton - he advanced to the best entertainer. The takings for his four week appearance was higher than 1,5 million dollars. He went on a further tour as well as making two documentary films:- "Elvis - That’s The Way It Is" and "Elvis On Tour".

In January 1973 an hour’s concert in Hawaii was transmitted to the Far Eastern Countries. In the following week this show was transmitted via satellite to over thirty European countries whereby over a thousand million people saw his concert.

Unfortunately after the divorce with his wife Priscilla , Elvis’s health deteriorated. He had a tendency to overindulge, and during his intensive tours he had the tendency to take medicaments, often in overdose. As Millionaire and World star, Elvis at 21 years of age had no private life and he could no longer visit the cinema or shops without being surrounded by a huge mob of fans.

His health deteriorated visibly but Elvis signed for the television company CBS for further concerts. Three of these, namely on 19,20 and 21st June were filmed. One could now see how ill he had become, and also hear that he sometimes had a problem with the text.

Elvis gave his last concert on 26th June 1977 in Indianapolis. His sudden death on 16th August 1977 was a huge shock for the whole world. No other artist in living memory had during his lifetime reached the magical 600 million record. Which after his death increased to over 1.5 billion. (This is an estimated total as no exact figure is available)

As long as there are people on this earth the name of Elvis Presley will not be forgotten.
